SR&ED questions, answered plainly.
SR&ED is Canada’s federal tax credit for eligible research and development work.
What is SR&ED?
The Scientific Research and Experimental Development program is a federal tax incentive that refunds part of what Canadian companies spend solving technical problems — mostly salaries, contractors and materials.
How much can my company get back?
Canadian-controlled private corporations can receive a refundable federal credit of 35% on up to $6 million CAD of qualifying expenditures a year, and 15% above that. Because of the 55% overhead proxy, that's roughly 54¢ CAD per dollar CAD of qualifying salary. Most provinces offer additional credits on top. Non-CCPCs generally receive a 15% non-refundable credit.
What does 'no credit, no fee' mean?
Our fee is 15% of the credit CRA actually assesses. If your claim produces no credit, you owe us nothing.
How far back can we claim?
You must file within 18 months of the end of the tax year in which the work was done. Miss that window and the credit for that year is gone.
Do we need lab coats to qualify?
No. Most claims come from software, engineering and manufacturing teams that faced technical uncertainty and worked through it systematically.
What happens if CRA reviews our claim?
We handle the review: preparing documentation, attending meetings with your team, and responding to CRA on your behalf, at no extra charge.
How much of our time does it take?
A discovery call and technical interviews. We write the technical narratives; you review and approve.
Do contractors count?
Payments to arm's-length Canadian contractors for SR&ED work can qualify, generally at 80% of the amount paid.
